Find the Right Wheels for the Way You Ride.
Find the Right Wheels for the Way You Ride. Rim depth, width, tire size, spokes, hubs and riding style all influence how a wheelset performs. The Serenade Wheel Guide helps you understand those choices—and build a wheelset that makes sense for your bike.
——01 / Start Here
The best wheel specification starts with where and how you ride. Choose your discipline first. Then refine the wheel around speed, terrain, tire size and handling priorities.
Choose road wheels based on the balance between aerodynamic efficiency, weight, crosswind handling and tire size.
Gravel wheels place greater emphasis on tire support, durability and control across changing surfaces.
Mountain bike wheels should be selected around tire size, terrain, rider demands and the balance between weight and impact resistance.
——02 / Quick Wheel Selector
You do not need to understand every wheel specification before choosing. Start here.
Your tire choice should influence the rim—not be treated as an afterthought.
——03 / Rim Depth Guide
Rim depth changes the balance between aerodynamics, weight and handling. There is no single ideal depth for every rider.
Best suited to riders who prioritize low weight, acceleration and predictable handling.
A versatile depth range balancing aerodynamic performance with manageable weight and handling.
Deeper profiles provide more aerodynamic surface area and are commonly chosen for faster riding.
Designed for riders who place aerodynamic performance ahead of minimum weight.
More climbing → consider shallower. More sustained speed → consider deeper. But rider weight, wind conditions, tire choice and rim design also matter.
——04/ 40mm vs 50mm and 60mm
One of the most common road wheel questions has no universal answer.
Choose based on the roads you actually ride. If your routes combine climbing, descending and changing conditions, a moderate depth can offer a versatile balance. If you spend more time riding quickly across flat or rolling roads, a deeper profile may better match your priorities.
——05/ Rim Width Guide
Internal rim width influences the installed shape of the tire. It affects tire support, usable pressure, handling and how well the rim matches different tire sizes.
| Internal Width | Typical Application | Tire Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 21mm | Road | 25–30c |
| 23mm | Modern Road / All-Road | 28–34c |
| 25mm | Gravel / Wide Road | 32–50c |
| 25–30mm | XC MTB | 1.9–2.4″ |
| 30–34mm | Trail MTB | 2.25–2.5″+ |
Wider Is Not Automatically Better.
The correct internal width depends on the tire you intend to use. A rim that is too narrow or unnecessarily wide for a particular tire can change the tire profile and handling characteristics.

——06/ Tire Compatibility
Your wheels and tires operate as a single system. When comparing carbon wheels, it is essential to determine which tire pairs best with them. First, check the maximum tire clearance supported by your frame and fork.
Performance road tires for speed and efficiency.
Wider tires for mixed surfaces and adventure.
High-volume tires for off-road control and g
What tire width will I actually ride?
A road racer using 28c tires has very different requirements from a gravel rider using 45c tires or an MTB rider using 2.4-inch tires.
What pressure will I use?
Larger tires and wider rims can support lower pressures, but the correct pressure depends on rider weight, tire construction, terrain and riding conditions.
Is the rim compatible with my tire?
Always check the specifications of both the rim and tire manufacturer before installation.
——07/ Spoke Guide
Spoke material changes wheel weight, stiffness, serviceability and ride characteristics. Neither option is automatically better for every rider.
Carbon spokes are suited to riders who prioritize low mass and a direct, performance-focused wheel feel.
Low weight / High stiffness / Direct response
Premium steel spokes provide excellent fatigue resistance, broad compatibility and straightforward servicing.
Durability / Serviceability / Versatility
——08/ Hub Guide
Very. The hub is the mechanical center of the wheel and affects bearing performance, drivetrain compatibility, engagement and spoke geometry.
Your drivetrain determines the required freehub standard.
Faster engagement reduces the amount of free movement before drivetrain torque reaches the wheel.
Bearing quality and sealing influence smoothness and long-term reliability.
The hub must match your frame and fork.
Choose the correct disc brake standard for your setup.
Hub geometry and spoke configuration must work with the intended wheel build.
Aluminum spoke nipples are lighter and harder, whereas copper nipples offer superior corrosion resistance.
If you need to true or repair carbon fiber spokes, you will need 5.5mm and 3.5mm tools.
The best hub is not simply the lightest or most expensive—it is the hub that fits your bike, riding style and wheel specification.
——09/ The Decision Matrix
Use this as a starting point—not an absolute rule.
| Your Priority | Look For |
|---|---|
| Climbing | Lower weight + moderate/shallow depth |
| Fast Road | Aero profile + road tire integration |
| All-Round Road | Balanced depth + modern internal width |
| Gravel Racing | Tire support + low weight |
| Gravel Adventure | Width + durability + serviceability |
| XC Racing | Low rotating mass + appropriate MTB width |
| Trail | Tire support + strength + durable spokes |
——10/ Don’t Choose by One Number
A 1,200g wheelset is not automatically better than a 1,400g wheelset. A 60mm rim is not automatically faster for every rider. A 34mm internal MTB rim is not automatically better than a 30mm rim. And carbon spokes are not automatically better than steel.
Wheel performance comes from the interaction between:
The right wheelset is the one whose complete specification matches its intended use.
